Hospital Bag Essentials: What to Pack (and What to Skip!)

I’m putting this out there right off the bat: there is no one-size-fits-all hospital packing list. You might break into hives at the thought of leaving your house without your curling iron (I admit that I did), or you might prefer to take the bare minimum (insurance, change of clothes, car seat). I can’t stress this enough: you do you.

But, as your due date approaches, packing that little bag will surely be one of the most exciting (and slightly nerve-wracking) tasks on your to-do list. So, fear not, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into our recommendations for what you should and should not pack for your hospital stay.

What to Pack:

Comfy Clothing: Think loose-fitting pajamas, a cozy robe, and comfortable slippers or socks. You'll want to feel relaxed and at ease during your hospital stay.

  1. Toiletries: Don't forget the basics like toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a hairbrush. Trust me, a little self-care goes a long way after giving birth.

  2. Snacks: Labor is hard work, and you'll need fuel to keep you going. Pack some healthy snacks like nuts, granola bars, and dried fruit to keep hunger at bay.

  3. Entertainment: Whether it's a book, magazine, or your favorite playlist, having something to distract yourself during downtime can be a lifesaver.

  4. Chargers: Don't forget to pack chargers for your phone, camera, and any other electronic devices you'll be bringing along. You'll want to capture those precious first moments with your little one!

  5. Nursing Bra and Breast Pads: If you plan on breastfeeding, a comfortable nursing bra and some breast pads are a must-have.

  6. Baby Essentials: Pack essentials for your newborn, including diapers, wipes, a going-home outfit, and a receiving blanket.

  7. Comfort Items: Bring along anything that helps you feel calm and relaxed, whether it's a favorite pillow, essential oils, or a soothing playlist.

  8. Important Documents: Don't forget your ID, insurance information, and any paperwork your hospital requires for admission.

  9. Birth Plan: If you have a birth plan, make sure to bring copies for your healthcare team. It's essential to communicate your preferences for labor and delivery clearly.

What to Leave Out:

  1. Too Many Clothes: Keep it minimal with clothing for you and your baby. You won't need a full wardrobe for your hospital stay.

  2. Heavy Books or Laptops: Opt for lighter entertainment options like a tablet or e-reader instead of bulky books or laptops.

  3. Perfumes or Strong Scents: Skip the strong perfumes or scented lotions, as they can be overwhelming for both you and your newborn.

  4. Valuables: Leave expensive jewelry or valuables at home to minimize the risk of loss or theft.

  5. Diapers and Wipes: Most hospitals provide diapers and wipes for your newborn, so there's no need to pack your own.

  6. Full Makeup Kit: Keep it simple with a few basic makeup items, as you'll likely be more focused on your baby than your makeup routine.

  7. Hair Tools: Ditch the hair straighteners and curling irons. Embrace the natural look during your hospital stay.

  8. Non-Essential Baby Gear: Leave the bulky baby swing or bouncer at home. You won't need them during your short hospital stay.

  9. Heavy Snacks: Skip the greasy or heavy snacks that might not sit well during labor or postpartum recovery.

  10. Work-related Items: Your hospital stay is a time to focus on bonding with your baby, so leave work-related items like laptops or paperwork at home.

And there you have it, folks! Armed with these essential items for your hospital bag (and a few non-essentials left behind), you'll be fully equipped for your big day and the wonderful journey ahead. Happy packing, and may your birth experience be nothing short of beautiful!
